Here is a #Truth I lived and learned throughout 2014.
Every choice has hidden consequences.
We have the power to make a choice but not choose the consequences.
Personally, I tend to prefer the word impact over consequences. Feel free to choose which word resonates with you.
Anyway, as I’ve been knocking around in the world, I’ve noticed something interesting about consequences.
It’s easier for grownups to believe that their choices will have a negative consequence on their life than a positive impact.
Kids definitely don’t have this issue.
Each day, children boldly ask, “What might happen if I do this?” and then actually do it. They are more interested in experiencing the impact/outcome than they are afraid of the possible consequences.
I remember when I first started writing the Field Notes. I wanted to teach you big life lessons, but I didn’t want to share my actual life or self with you.
For example, this week I baked these cookies and I ate one before I remembered to take the photo. Not a huge life lesson right? But that’s what I did, and who doesn’t like butter, sugar, and chocolate chips?
The number one thing I did NOT want to include in my musings each week was a photo of myself.
I was terrified of that.
✧ Sometimes my acne flares up…what if I didn’t have a good photo to share?
✧ Was I really going to get on the “selfie” bandwagon? (FYI, I abhor bandwagons! I set the trends, not follow them)
✧ What if I shared myself and you didn’t like me and now you know what I look like??
Instead of letting my fear of “consequences” determine my path, I decided to just give sharing myself with you a try and see what happened.
Much to my surprise, no one said, “could you please stick to talking about The Purse Process®”, sent me hate mail, or suggested I buy more concealer or a different shade of red lipstick.
In fact, many subscribers reply to me each week with thanks, inspirations they took away, and stories of their own!
Sharing myself has opened the door to developing real relationships with my subscribers all over the world. In fact, I Skyped with one in Italy last week. Hi Alycia!
Plus, I now know many of your names, pets names (Hi Maxy in Australia!), and get to see your smiles on a regular basis because we’ve become Facebook friends, chatted on the phone, or met in person when I visited your town.
The hidden consequence of being willing to pioneer a different way of connecting with people is that now others want me to teach them how I do what I do.
Yes, the thing I was terrified to do had become an income stream for me. Who would have thunk it?
Here I am engaged in just one iteration of that.
In this photo, I’m completing the final preparations for teaching my first class on the method I use to write the Field Notes and share my secret “anthropologists only” insights into why people all over the world love it.
If you missed the class and want to take it, I’ll be offering it again next month. Hit reply and let me know if you are interested and I’ll make sure to reach out to you personally when I set the date.
So, what might you attempt if you weren’t afraid the hidden consequences were going to eat you, or at least bite you on the butt?
Whatever it is you want to attempt, I have a way of making that seem totally possible and even exciting.
Schedule a 30-minute Clarity Call with me for just a few bucks and get your year going in an unexpected direction.
Until next week, adventure on!
