This past weekend I made a stupid decision that resulted in me sporting a REALLY BAD SUNBURN.
I haven’t had a sunburn this bad in OVER A DECADE, and I have to admit I’m disappointed in myself for allowing it to happen.
I KNOW BETTER!
Being fair-skinned, I know I can’t skip reapplying sunscreen when I’m outside all day, and getting burned was completely UNNECESSARY!
This was taken pre-sunburn.
I made a bonehead decision, and as a result, I now have a pair of angry red shoulders that remind me (EVERY TIME I try to lift my arms!) that I didn’t put my knowledge into practice.
I’m well on the mend because I’ve been applying a healing mixture of coconut oil and lavender oil to my burn, but boy did this sunburn cause me to reflect on the relationship between decisions and results.
Of course, a single sunburn is not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but I love the immediate decision/result relationship it allows me to talk about with you.
Sometimes we don’t have the knowledge to prevent something bad from happening.
Sometimes we want to make something good happen, but we don’t know what we need to do to make that a reality.
BUT MOST OF THE TIME when we get a result we don’t want, we knew EXACTLY what we needed to do, but we DECIDED not to do it.
Maybe what we needed to do was inconvenient, or we were feeling unmotivated, or we were secretly allowing ourselves to make a bad decision so we could test our mettle and watch ourselves fight our way back from it.
I’ve never done that last one, have you? He he he! 😉 Hey, we all have our own crazy reasons for doing things that seemed totally logical at the time, right?
Anyway, that day it was a little inconvenient for me to reapply my sunscreen, and so I decided not to.
I knew exactly what I needed to do, I didn’t do it, and so I paid for it.
Of course, as I said before, a sunburn is really a minor problem in the greater scheme of life, but it’s a FANTASTIC EXAMPLE of how not using the knowledge we have resulted in pain.
If you are like me, most of the time you probably know what you need to do, and yet sometimes you don’t do it.
Looking back, you’ve probably kicked yourself too because you knew better.
Life would be so much easier if we’d just did what we need to do WHEN we need to do it.
You probably haven’t suffered a sunburn lately, but I bet you have an example of knowing what you needed to do and deciding not to do it and how there were painful consequences as a result.
