When you decide to Choose Your Own Adventure in life, unexpected things are going to happen.
If you are a control freak like me, the unexpected can feel SUPER, SUPER scary.
But, you know what?
If you’re REALLY living, that’s how it’s gonna be–A LOT.
Let me share a story from my travels with you about “ax murderers.”
In my experience, the spirit loves change and growth, but I’ll warn you in advance…the mind…well, not so much.
When embarking on a new adventure, it’s a good idea to have someone in your corner who will give you a swift kick in the pants in those moments when you’ve decided it would be better to stay in your comfort zone than do things a little differently.
This year, getting out of my comfort zone meant overcoming my fear of “ax murderers,” otherwise known as “Stranger Danger.”
You know the cultural belief we have that strangers should be avoided and that it’s going to be nobody’s fault but your own if you let down your guard with someone you don’t know and your mutilated corpse ends up in an alley somewhere?
Or maybe it’s just me, and I got this idea growing up because my father was a Cop?
Anyway, this year I had to get over it.
Taking The Purse Process® on Tour was an expensive undertaking, and one of the ways I controlled my costs was by using a website called airbnb.com.
Airbnb is a service where people make money off their (luxuriously decorated but unused) spare bedrooms by renting them out to strangers…while remaining at home.
Talk about stranger danger!
This year I subjected myself to possible ax murder on dozens of occasions by staying at an Airbnb in many different cities.
This was positively terrifying for a girl like me.
I was traveling alone for the first time to cities I didn’t know anything about, and stayed with people who I had no assurance were not ax murderers other than “supposedly” other people had survived the ordeal before me and left the host a charming online “review.”
You can’t believe everything you read online though, right?
One evening while traveling, I found myself with an unexpected invitation to attend an event in a downtown penthouse.
I was terrified that the woman who invited me was going to turn out to be an ax murderer, or at least I was going to end up in a tub of ice with a kidney missing.
Despite my fears, I made myself go anyway.
During a tour of her home, the owner, her friend, and I ended up in the master bathroom where there was a huge tub (thankfully not full of ice).
But, I was still so terrified I nearly bolted.
Turned out, she just wanted a moment away from the crowd so she could have me look into her purse in private.
Since then, we’ve stayed connected and even met up for coffee when I was in town.
I haven’t told these ladies yet that I was worried they might be ax murderers, but I’m pretty sure they are Field Notes subscribers and will get a kick out of this story.
I can laugh about it now, but in the moment, it was NO laughing matter.
If you’re feeling the urge to get out of your comfort zone in 2015, I have the perfect thing for you.
